Located on the first permanent settlement of the Beaubien-Miranda Land Grant. It was the site picked by Lucien Maxwell the late 1840's and Kit Carson lived here from 1849-1851. Rayado currently means "striped" in Spanish, but formerly meant "line" -- as in boundary line. It was used as a base camp in 1947 and at the time was called Carson-Maxwell or Car-Max.
