Head of Dean's name is derived from its location, situated at the start of Dean Canyon. Head of Dean was originally a staffed camp from 1971 through 1976 with a program of Lumbering and Astronomy. It was a trail camp from 1977 through 1982. It was staffed again in 1983 with its current program.
