Named for Petra (daughter of Carlos Beaubien) and Jesus Abreu who established a pioneer settlement in the Rayado area. After Lucien Maxwell moved to Cimarron in 1857, the Abreu family took over the Rayado area where they operated a prosperous ranch, store and stagecoach stop.
